The Speech and Language Therapy Process

Small Talk aims to keep the power of decisions where it belongs, in parents’ hands. We assist and counsel parents by providing information and professional guidance, to help make the best choices for their specific children and their families’ needs. We are blessed to walk alongside parents in this journey, but all final decisions ultimately belong to our clients’ parents. We accomplish this by keeping kids first and staying private pay. No insurance company decides if your child “qualifies” for speech and language intervention services or how much treatment they “deserve” to have. You choose what is right for your child every step of the way.

To Begin – The Parent Chooses:

  • To sign child up for speech and language intervention services with guidance from the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) OR
  • Has the child screened. This is not a full evaluation. It merely provides a brief snapshot of the child’s communication skills.

Then

The SLP and parent(s) discuss what, if any, “red flags” were observed in the screening and if further intervention services may be warranted. If so, a parent interview is conducted to better get to know the child, their history and specific needs.

Next – The Parent Chooses:

  • To have a full speech and language evaluation completed
  • To begin therapy and observe child in the first few sessions to determine needs

OR

  • Parent states specific skill(s) they want their child work on.

From there, the parent and Speech-Language Pathologist agree on goals for therapy, frequency and duration of services, location of treatment sessions and anything else unique to the child and/or family situation.
The parents stay informed along every step of the way and can change their mind on any aspect of treatment at any time. This is a true team effort and the SLP is merely a member of the team.
