free phone consultation services

Free Phone Consultations

Chatting with a parent about their child, what the parent is observing, concerns, possible goals, ideas, and so on, is always free. Small Talk educates and trains caregivers as to how to help their children learn, grow, practice and maintain learned skills. Consultations and collaborative discussions with other service providers are also free.

Child Speech and Language Screenings

Speech and Language Screenings

If parents are unsure whether their child should receive therapeutic intervention, a brief snapshot of the child’s communication skills may be gathered. This can help with the decision to further evaluate the child’s development of communication skills or to enroll the child in services.

Child speech evaluation

Functional Evaluations

No standardized tests are utilized at Small Talk. In-depth parent interviews are performed and a speech and language sample is recorded and analyzed. This usually takes 2-4 sessions. We create a more complete picture of the child’s communicative strengths and weaknesses, determine a possible diagnosis, whether therapeutic intervention is necessary and possible goals to target in treatment.

Angie treats children with:

  • Speech Sound Disorders (intelligibility, the way a child’s words sound)
  • Stuttering (repeating sounds and/or words or dragging sounds out)
  • Receptive Language Disorders (understanding words and concepts)
  • Expressive Language Disorders (the types of words used, number of words used and how they are utilized)
  • Selective Mutism (the child has the ability to speak, but doesn’t)
Children's speech therapy direct intervention

Direct Intervention Services

Therapy is performed in person at a location convenient for the family, usually at home or school. Sometimes other locations, such as a local library, can be utilized, as well. A typical session lasts 30 minutes but can be longer if the parents and SLP agree that the child would benefit from more time. Most children receive treatment once or twice per week, depending upon severity of needs, response to intervention and the ability of the family to make it to therapy.

children's teletherapy

Teletherapy Services

For families that live outside the travel area for the SLP or that have scheduling restrictions, teletherapy can be a wonderful option. The treatment sessions are performed on-line with games, books and other fun tools being utilized while the SLP teaches and instructs the child, with possible assistance from a trusted adult on the child’s end of the screen. A good camera, quality microphone, stable internet connection and helpful adult to assist the child are required.
